In this most recent body of work, I transform my expressive textile paintings into metaphorical tarps. By definition, tarps are protective, versatile and adaptive. My tarps embody the best attributes of textile with the potential of sculptural form and expressive gestures through painting, printing and mixed media.
The Tarp Series investigates the following questions: what is the role of art in a fraught society ruled by technology and uncertainty? What does it mean to be a maker under circumstances where political comment, identity and narrative are a primary conversation? Is there a role for creative expression in non-narrative ways, much like the role that music performs? How can we “play” more, separating the essence of creativity from the “serious” and formal presentation of art found only in museum and gallery settings?
For me, the tarp is a symbol of shelter, and sheltering. Making tarps explores and fulfills the important role that inspiration, creative thinking and creative practice provide in order to make the rest of the oughts and musts of the world happen. They are a momentary pause, to remind us of our humanity and express compassion.
EXHIBITIONS: I am currently seeking venues for exhibitions of my Tarp Series, and Scroll Series. For more information on my currently available Tarps, please visit this continually updated page.
